Renaissance Influence on the Historical and Social Significance of Self-Portraiture During the Renaissance, artists were acquiring status and the technical means to create a new genre of art called self-portraiture (Bond). Portraits are defined as having a likeness of a specific individual (Adams). However, self-portraits do not only have a likeness of the artist but also a sense of psychology that connects the viewer to the artist. This connection gives the self-portrait a depth of complexity that even portraits do not always achieve. Following the development of self-portraiture, one must transverse the development of portraiture. Then one must follow self-portraits connection to portraiture and self-portraits own unique development. Then one must recognize the influence of the society on the value of the artist and their artworks. In order to understand the significance of the development of self-portraiture, one must have some familiarity with the history of portraiture and its development as a whole. Portraiture is a facet of the artistic community that retains a deep history from multiple ancient cultures.
